Everything you need to know before you go
Many people think of the Three Gorges as a single place—in fact, it's three distinct gorges, each with its own character.
~8 km, the shortest yet most dramatic.
Sheer cliffs rise on both sides, with the river narrowing to less than 100 meters. The image on the back of China's ¥10 banknote was taken here at Kuimen Gate.
~45 km, renowned for its winding beauty.
Jagged peaks rise through perpetual mist. The famous Twelve Peaks of Wushan—including Goddess Peak—stand along its banks. Sailing through feels like drifting through a living ink painting.
~66 km, the longest gorge.
Once notorious for treacherous rapids, now calmer waters reveal dramatic gorge-within-gorge landscapes and the massive Three Gorges Dam—a breathtaking passage of human engineering and natural wonder.
Fengjie, Chongqing · ~2-3hrs
The city where Li Bai bid farewell at dawn and Liu Bei entrusted his kingdom. Overlooking Kuimen Gate, it's where poetry and history converge. Ticket: approx. ¥60-100.
Wushan, Chongqing · ~2-3hrs
The most celebrated of Wushan's Twelve Peaks. As your ship sails through Wu Gorge, Goddess Peak gradually appears ahead—one of the most breathtaking moments of the journey. Ticket: from ~¥100.
Yichang, Hubei · ~3-4hrs
World's largest hydroelectric project. Experience sailing through the five-stage ship locks—watching the ship rise or descend is an engineering spectacle. Ticket: approx. ¥105.
Fengdu, Chongqing · ~2-3hrs
A mythological underworld city rooted in ancient Chinese folklore. Vivid imagery illustrates traditional moral values of justice and karma.
Daning River, Wushan · ~3-4hrs
Transfer to a smaller boat for pristine gorge scenery: emerald waters, lush vegetation, wild macaques on the cliffs. Often said to be even more beautiful than the main Three Gorges.
Zhong County, Chongqing · ~1-2hrs
Called the "Pearl of the Yangtze"—a 12-story wooden pavilion built into a solitary rocky outcrop. Since the reservoir filled, the fortress appears to float like a jewel on the water.
